According to a Harvard-published blog by Rockwell Anyoha, by the first half of the 20th century, scientists, mathematicians, and philosophers had conceptualized the idea of the possibility of artificial intelligence after the “Golden Age of Science Fiction” in movies from 1938 to 1946. “Artificial intelligence” as a term wasn’t coined until 1965 when AI’s proof of concept was presented in the Dartmouth Summer Research Program (DSRPAI) on Artificial Intelligence by Allen Newell, Cliff Shaw, and Herbert Simon – the creators of Logic Theorist. The DSRPAI was hosted by John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky. McCarthy who coined the term “Artificial Intelligence” during the historic conference imagined there to be open-ended discussions about AI where researchers can collaborate. However, standard methods for the field weren’t agreed upon during the conference, people “came and went as they pleased”, but for the most part, it was agreed by everyone that AI was achievable and the conference set the tone for 20 years worth of AI research.

Logic Theorist

Logic Theorist is a computer programming language created by Allen Newell, Cliff Shaw, and Herbert Simon. Known as the “first artificial intelligence program”, Logic Theorist was designed to think and solve problems as a human would. Not only did Logic Theorist birth the field of study in Artificial Intelligence, it also made way for heuristic programming and the creation of Information Processing Language, or IPL.

Logic Theorist worked by mimicking the ability of human mathematicians and had the ability to make mathematical proofs. The program was tested on Bertrand Rusell and Alfred Whitehead’s Principia Mathematica. Logic Theorist proved 38 out of 52 theorems and was said to provide more detailed proofs than Principia Mathematica’s authors.

Who Invented Artificial Intelligence?

In 1950, Alan Turing published “Computer Machinery and Intelligence”. Turing’s reasoning for exploring the mathematical possibility of AI was since humans have the available information to make decisions or solve problems, machines could possibly do the same thing. In “Computer Machinery and Intelligence”, Turing discusses the creation of intelligent machines and how to test that intelligence which would later be known as the Turing Test.

Since he coined the term, the “Father of AI” is considered to be John McCarthy. McCarthy defined Artificial Intelligence as “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines.” As the creator of LISP, a standard programming language that is used in robotics, scientific applications, and even airline scheduling, McCarthy solidified his footing in the realm of AI with his countless contributions to the study.

In 1951, it was Christopher Strachey who was responsible for creating the earliest successful AI program. Strachey created a checkers game program that ran on the Ferranti Mark I computer at the University of Manchester, England. Christopher Strachey would later become the director of the Programming Research Group at the University of Oxford.

Testing Evaluation

Types of AI

Arend Hintze, an integrative biology professor and researcher at Michigan State University was the first to define the four different types of artificial intelligence. Apparently, there are three AI learning ways: restricted, general, or super. Restriction means the AI machine operates based on a narrow set of rules, general which means stimulating the general intelligence of the human mind and its thought process, and super which means it goes beyond what humans are capable of.

Reactive AI

Reactive AI is known as the simplest type of AI, often performing basic tasks as the first stage of any AI system. Reactive machines react to specific situations based on pre-defined rules. An example of this would be a computer playing chess or checkers that follow specific rules to determine its next moves. As a reactive machine, it moves solely on what its predefined rules are and doesn’t learn or adapt as it’s used. It simply follows its program.

Limited Memory

As its name implies, limited memory machines learn and adapt from experience, only their memory is limited. Its algorithm is inspired by the neurons that work together in the human brain and gets smarter as it receives more information. However, unlike the way humans derive meaning from their past experiences, Limited Memory AI doesn’t store data as memories to learn from, it must be programmed into the AI. An example of a limited memory machine is self-driving cars. Information like stop signs, traffic, curved roads, and bumps are programmed into the car and this data helps the car decide how to operate without hitting other cars or cutting off other drivers.

This type of AI is theoretical in nature unlike the first types of AI that already exist today. According to Coursera, once developed, Theory of Mind AI will try to understand human emotions, intentions, and beliefs which will allow it to interact more naturally with humans. It will mimic human cognitive abilities capable of processing its own thoughts and others – social awareness that is the basis of human society. Eventually, Theory of Mind AI would be able to predict behavior and understand human intentions.


Another theoretical type of AI, Self-Aware AI machines are the closest to becoming sentient which means they are aware of their own existence, emotion, and consciousness. It is said to be the “final evolution” of AI but there is still a long way to go before it is developed. The precursor to developing self-aware AI machines is to understand the human brain’s intelligence, how memory is stored, how the brain learns, and how it makes decisions.
